Limerence: Three Poems
fixed media for 5.1 or stereo
Originally composed for 5.1 surround sound but mixed for stereo release, my piece “Limerence” sets three original poems to music. The word “limerence” is in reference to a state of utter obsession with someone, usually unreciprocated. Each poem refers to the phases of limerence: infatuation, crystallization, and deterioration.
My piece reframes the word in context of my relationship to the United States. The narrative follows the evolution from early obsession to lost pride, transforming nuanced emotions into constructed allegories relating to policy, consumerism, nostalgia, and nationalism.
Trigger warning: metaphorical references to abusive relationships and suicide.
Thank you to Jillian Garnett for her beautiful recitation of the three poems: “My Infatuation”, “You Sound Crazy”, and “How to Deteriorate”.
