Like a Flower
for solo piano
Two of my favorite flowers—sunflowers and lavender—were the inspiration for my piece Like A Flower. The first movement, Sunflower, paints the picture of a sunflower field from dawn to dusk. In a process called heliotropism, young sunflowers, before they blossom, follow the direction of the sun throughout the day. I chose to represent this affection in the music by featuring a recurring drone in the entire movement. Halfway through, the movement reaches a climax portraying the sun at its highest point. Afterward, as the sun goes down, the music begins to relax as well before the night falls. The second movement, Lavender, represents both the beauty of lavender fields and my attraction to the plant. When I think of lavender, my mind immediately goes to the beautiful color of the flowers. The movement makes use of compositional techniques such as changing time signatures and arpeggios to portray the beauty of these brilliant, graceful fields, and the music is passionate but delicate.
