"Film Music (For an Exit)” is inspired by the innovative and genre-bending music of the acclaimed English rock band Radiohead. In the piece, whose title is a pun on the Radiohead song “Exit Music (For a Film)”, I draw upon the band’s distinct sonic palette through infusing orchestral elements with a sense of unpredictability and emotional depth. An ostinato drives almost the entirety of the work which, in true Radiohead fashion, is richly layered, evolving, and transforming as the composition progresses. The piece also possesses a cinematic quality, evoking the atmosphere of a climactic scene in a film by capturing a sense of urgency, anticipation, and release. It was written at a time of immense change in my life where one of the only constant things was listening to Radiohead’s music.
